Iran will hold nuclear talks with France, Germany and Britain on Friday in Istanbul, the country’s foreign ministry said on Monday, days after the European countries threatened to reimpose sanctions on Tehran if it did not make progress on a new deal to limit its nuclear activities.

“Iran has agreed to hold a new round of negotiations,” Esmail Baghaei, a spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, said, according to Iranian state media.

France, Germany and Britain remain part of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that the Obama administration signed but that the first Trump administration withdrew from the agreement. Last week, the three European countries agreed to restore United Nations sanctions on Iran by the end of August unless there was movement on a new nuclear deal.

The Europeans hoped that the threat would revive efforts to restrict or even eliminate Iran’s ability to enrich uranium.

The three countries were also trying to push Iran to restore its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog. Inspectors for the agency used to monitor Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, but Tehran stopped collaborating with them in June, after Israel and the United States bombed the country’s nuclear sites. Since the strikes, Iran and the United States have made no progress toward renewing nuclear talks.
