A federal agent shot and wounded a motorist in Chicago on Saturday, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.
DHS officials said in the statement that the agent shot the individual after that person, who they said was armed, tried to ram a law enforcement vehicle. The New York Times could not independently verify details of the encounter.
The wounded individual had non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. No law enforcement officers were injured.
The incident occurred on Chicago’s Southwest Side, where federal immigration agents were on patrol.
Dozens of people immediately gathered in the area to protest immigration enforcement, which has been escalating sharply in Chicago and its suburbs in recent days. Federal agents responded with pepper balls to disperse the crowd.
