Workers scrambled onto the street in Midtown Manhattan, some crying and others with their hands in the air, after a shooting left a police officer dead and at least two others were shot.

On the 31st floor of 345 Park Avenue, where the violence occurred, employees of the asset manager Blackstone heard a loud bang from a floor above. Some shrugged it off, while others started running toward the exits. Then, employees received an email notifying them that there was a shooter in the building. A follow-up email urged them to evacuate, though at that point police officers were ushering employees out one floor at a time by the elevator.

The part of New York where the shooting occurred, Midtown East, is a vibrant business district that also features some of its most iconic landmarks. St. Patrick’s Cathedral, one of the earliest Gothic Revival buildings in the country, is nearby, and Grand Central Station is within walking distance along Park Avenue.

Around the Park Avenue building, law enforcement officers cleared a perimeter as drones and police helicopters hovered overhead. They searched any cars left within the perimeter were searched, as officers inspected passenger side seats and the trunks of taxi cabs.

Jorge Jimenez, 62, a livery cab driver from Queens, was picking up a client from a restaurant across the street when he saw office workers running with their hands in the air. He described seeing women running with their high heels in their hands, and said that a K-9 unit searched his car.

“I thought it was like something like terrorism from the commotion on people’s faces,” Mr. Jimenez said.

Mr. Jimenez was supposed to take his client to LaGuardia Airport, but stood waiting to be able to collect his car. His client would have to take an Uber, he said.
