President Biden will deliver his annual State of the Union address on Tuesday night, speaking before Congress for the first time since Republicans captured the House majority.
Here’s what you need to know.
How can I watch?
The president’s remarks are scheduled for 9 p.m. Eastern time. The New York Times will livestream the address at nytimes.com, including analysis from reporters. Mr. Biden’s speech will also be carried live on major networks and cable television.
What will Biden say?
The prime-time State of the Union address is a key opportunity for the president to lay out his agenda before Congress and the nation. Even as partisanship deepens in Washington, he is expected to reiterate a message of unity and present himself as the adult in the room.
Mr. Biden is expected to try to strike a balance between promoting his legislative achievements so far, like major investments in infrastructure and manufacturing, and pitching the spending proposals he has failed to secure in his first two years, including expanded access to subsidized child care, universal prekindergarten and paid leave policies. He is expected to speak for about an hour.
Is there a response?
Republicans have chosen Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas to deliver the traditional rebuttal. Speaking from Little Rock, Ms. Huckabee Sanders, who was the press secretary for President Donald J. Trump, is expected to amplify Republican criticism of Mr. Biden’s approach to issues like inflation and immigration as House Republicans prepare to use their new majority to scrutinize the administration.
Republican leaders in Congress suggested in a statement announcing Ms. Huckabee Sanders’s speech that she, who at 40 is the nation’s youngest governor, is a fresh contrast to Mr. Biden, 80.
Representative Delia Ramirez, Democrat of Illinois, will also deliver a response on behalf of the progressive Working Families Party. Ms. Ramirez, who in November became the first Hispanic woman elected to represent her state in Congress, is a new member of the progressive caucus in the House.
Who will attend?
The address is traditionally given in the House chamber, before a joint session of Congress. Notable guests will include the parents of Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old Black man who was beaten to death by police officers in Memphis. Brandon Tsay, the California man who disarmed a gunman in the Monterey Park shooting that killed 11 people, is also expected to attend.
