NextImg:Zack Snyder’s R-rated ‘Rebel Moon: Director’s Cut’ runtime is nearly 2 hours longer than both original movies combined

More On:

Zack Snyder

If you know Zack Snyder, then you won’t be surprised to hear that the Rebel Moon: The Director’s Cut runtime is, well, really long. After all, this is the same man who brought you a four-hour cut of Justice League. He’s not exactly known for brevity.

The extended cuts of the first two Rebel Moon movies are coming out on Netflix this Friday, aka Rebel Moon Part One: Director’s Cut and Rebel Moon Part Two: Director’s Cut. These director’s cuts are both rated R, and they promise to be bloodier and sexier than the original two-part sci-fi epic. Directed by Snyder, who also co-wrote the script with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella as Kora. Kora was formerly a brainwashed soldier for the evil Imperium Motherworld, but in the first movie, she becomes a rebel fighter dedicated to defending the farming community that lives on the moon known as Veldt. The first film is about assembling a team, and the second film was about the epic battle, between the rebels and the back-from-the-dead villain, Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein).

The first two films—which were both rated PG-13—were 2 hours and 16 minutes, and 2 hours and 3 minutes, respectively. That’s a grand total of 4 hours and 19 minutes, for the two-part franchise. But based on the trailer for the Rebel Moon Director’s Cut, there will be a lot of never-before-seen footage. So how long is the Rebel Moon director’s cut?

According to the press screeners that went out to journalists on Monday, the Rebel Moon Part One: Director’s Cut runtime is 3 hours 24 minutes (aka, 204 minutes). The Rebel Moon Part Two: Director’s Cut is 2 hours 53 minutes (aka, 173 minutes). That makes for a grand total of 6 hours and 17 minutes (aka, 377 minutes) for this director’s cut.

That means we’re getting nearly two hours of bonus footage that we didn’t see in the first two film. From the trailer, it seems that the robot known as Jimmy, voiced by Anthony Hopkins, gets a much larger role. The trailer also includes a giant robot woman with giant robot nipples that we’ve never seen before, and an explicit sex scene with Boutella and her love interest, Gunnar, played by Michiel Huisman. And we’re sure the battle scenes will be much longer and much bloodier.

Snyder came up with new names for the two director’s cuts—Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness—but Netflix opted to list the films as simply “Part One: Director’s Cut” and “Part Two: Director’s Cut” on its platform. But with this much new footage, they feel almost like new films. So strap in for a long ride.

Both Rebel Moon Part One: Director’s Cut and Rebel Moon Part Two: Director’s Cut will begin streaming on Netflix on Friday, August 2.
