This will be a Father’s Day that the Mulligan family won’t soon forget.
What started as an innocent blunder by a young Boston Red Sox fan turned into a heartwarming TV moment in the upper deck of Fenway Park during Game 1 of the Red Sox’s doubleheader against the Yankees on Sunday.
It started when young fan Charlie Mulligan was gifted a foul ball by another fan in the row in front of him.
Getting wrapped up in the moment, Charlie showed off some impressive arm strength and chucked the ball back onto the field despite the efforts of his dad, Pat, and fellow fan, Mike, to snag the ball in time.
Realizing what he had done, and seeing the frustration on the face of his brother Jack, Charlie crumpled into his dad’s arms in tears.
The entire scene was captured by NESN cameras as broadcasters Dave O’Brien and Will Middlebrooks narrated the dramatic events unfolding in the Coca-Cola Deck.
Thankfully this story had a happy ending once the Red Sox got wind of what had occurred and sent up signed baseballs and jerseys for the two young fans.
“Are you mad at him now?” Middlebrooks jokingly asked as the camera showed Jack receiving a signed ball and jersey from Kenley Jansen.
Red Sox sideline reporter Jahmai Webster caught up with the Mulligan family later on in the game, but Charlie was still overcome with emotions from having thrown the ball away earlier.
Jack had seemed to be in better spirits.
“He was very excited to get the ball, but so excited that he made a nice throw out to left field,” Pat said while holding Charlie. “His brother was a little upset, but we’re recovering and everyone is being so nice. Our friend Mike there is the one who gave us the ball, so we’re awfully grateful to everybody for being so nice.”
Charlie was still too distraught to speak when Webster tried to ask if he was feeling better.
The Mulligan family was gifted one more item for the boys as Webster broke out a pair of signed baseballs from the NESN broadcast team, which included a message from Middlebrooks complimenting the throw.
“It’s a lot of fun every time we come and he loves baseball, and we love this place. Thanks for being so nice to us,” Pat later added.
To put a bow on the Father’s Day the Mulligan family won’t soon forget, the Red sox defeated the Yankees 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader in Boston.
The Yankees had lost four of their last give games against the Red Sox going into the second game of the doubleheader.
