Taylor Sheridan’s hit Western drama Yellowstone is set to make its highly-anticipated return on Sunday, November 10, but after nearly two years of waiting, even the most die-hard Dutton fans are in desperate need of a refresher.

For those who need a reminder, Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 8, “A Knife and No Coin” (aka the midseason finale) premiered on Paramount Network back on January 1, 2023. It was an eventful episode with some serious cliffhangers, but unless you recently rewatched the first half of the season, there’s a good chance you’ve forgotten exactly what unfolded.

With Kevin Costner announcing his departure from the series, things will likely look noticeably different for the Duttons when Yellowstone does return. While details surrounding John Dutton’s fate and Season 5, Part 2’s storylines are still largely unknown, based on a recent Season 5, Part 2 trailer, Rip (Cole Hauser), Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce (Luke Grimes), Jamie (Wes Bentley), Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and more fan-favorite Yellowstone fixtures are returning to fight for the Dutton family legacy and the beloved ranch.

As noted in a previous piece, the trailer shows a body being pushed off of a cliff, Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) advising “younger lion” Jamie, Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Kayce teaming up as “brothers” (with a blood oath and everything!), and Rip and Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith) preparing to fight. Rip sets fire to a car! Beth (with drink in hand) tells him “I can’t do this anymore.” And he replies, “Well, you’re gonna have to, honey. Or we’re gonna lose this place.”

The Dutton kids are crying! There’s physical fighting, verbal sparring, knives, guns, horses, fires, and more. Judging by Beth’s “The only thing left to do is to kill as much as you can before they kill you” threat, we imagine there will be a decent amount of death, too.

The official synopsis for Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 9, “Desire Is All You Need,” reads: “After an event rattles the state of Montana, nothing will ever be the same.” So before Yellowstone returns with new episodes, it’s crucial to refresh yourself on the first half of Season 5.
