The Yankees youth movement has now extended to  WFAN’s radio booth.

Emmanuel Berbari, who turned 24 in July, will join 36-year old Justin Shackil for this weekend series in Pittsburgh.

The legendary tandem of John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman will take the trip off.

Sterling, 85, has cut back on trips this season, though, if the Yankees were still in contention, he likely would have traveled to PNC Park.

Waldman, 77, is off for Rosh Hashanah, which begins Friday evening.

Both Sterling and Waldman are expected to return next season.

In fact, the way things are trending, they may be in the booth forever.

Still, this weekend is monumental because it will mark the first time since 1989 — a decade before Berbari was born! — that neither Sterling or Waldman will be on the call for a Yankee game.

Sterling began his Yankee run in ‘89, while Waldman joined him 2005.

This season, in his first as Sterling’s official backup, Shackil has established himself as a nuts-and-bolts, detailed play-by-player.

Berbari has been on the Yankees’ pre- and post-game following Sweeny Murti’s departure from FAN.

About a decade ago, after his freshman year of high school, the Long Island bred Berbari began understanding the craft at a Chaminade High School sportscasting camp run by former Post sportswriter Pat Reichart, who has become a mentor to Berbari.

This weekend's Pirates series will mark the first time since 1989 that neither John Sterling or Suzyn Waldman will be on the call for a Yankee game.

Berbari graduated from Fordham in 2021. This weekend, he will be on the call for Yankee games.

“Excited would be understatement,” said Berbari, who will be on play-by-play for the middle three innings each game. “It means everything to me. My passion for broadcasting began listening to and watching Yankee games. When I realized I had just as much interest in how the game was called as the game itself, I knew it’s exactly what I wanted to do.”

Berbari described sitting in for Sterling and Waldman as an “awesome privilege.” He called both of them incredible mentors to him. Shackil is a mentor, too. Remember, Berbari’s only 24, while Shackil is 36. Shackil graduated from Fordham in 2009, when Berbari was 10.

“Emmanuel has been sending me his play-by-work for critiques since he was a freshman in college,” Shackil said. “I have never seen another young broadcaster smoothly apply constructive criticism back into his work as quickly as Emmanuel. His persistence, ambitious drive and intelligence have always stood out.”

Berbari added, “It definitely makes it even cooler to share the booth with him.”
