Cam Schlittler may be just what the Yankees’ pitching staff needed. 

With the Bombers’ starting rotation teetering, the 24-year-old right-hander made his big league debut in early July and has been their best starter ever since. 

In eight starts, Schlittler has a 2.76 earned run average with 46 punch outs over 42 ⅓ innings. 

He’s been even better in his last three outings after seemingly getting his home run problems under control. 

In 17 ⅔ innings since Aug. 13, Schlittler has allowed just one earned run (0.51 ERA) without allowing a single long ball. 

Schlittler is still walking too many batters over that stretch, with seven free passes across the three outings, but he’s been nearly unhittable, giving up just seven hits with 20 strikeouts.

The underlying advanced metrics show that this recent stretch is no fluke as well. 

In those three starts combined, Schlittler has a 1.82 fielding independent pitching and a 2.60 expected FIP. 

That three-game stretch came against the Nationals, Rays and Twins, which aren’t exactly high-powered offenses, but the Southsiders are no juggernaut either. 

Following their 10-4 loss Friday to the Yankees, the White Sox’s .676 on-base plus slugging is third-worst in baseball, and their .234 batting average is just as bad, tied for third-worst in MLB
