Mr. Met shouldn’t have such a big head after all.
The Yankees are top of the MLB custom-license plate heap in the Big Apple, with 3,110 vehicles sporting tags with the iconic Bronx Bombers “bat in the hat” insignia.
Just 902 boasted the Mets logo.

The Yankees’ glorious history of 27 World Series titles and 40 American League pennants, compared to the Amazins’ two championships and five National League pennants, might explain the plate differential.
“You’re talking platinum. Top shelf. Five star,” boasted Guardian Angels founder and longtime Yankee diehard, Curtis Sliwa. “The Mets? I mean, we’re talking JV here. They’re not ready for primetime. They’re poseurs. They pose as if they’re on the cusp of winning a World Series and they always leave their fans depressed.”

Even some diehard Mets fans agreed.
“It all started with Ruth, Gehrig, and DiMaggio. Then you had Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, and the Derek Jeter-Joe Torre era,” admitted Cormac Gordon, 75, of Staten Island. “The Mets have had some fantastic spurts, but never had a run like those Yankees’ eras,” Gordon said.

Last year, 229 registered drivers who applied for the MLB plates in New York were Yankee fans. Only 116 Mets devotees felt the compulsion to boast about the Metropolitans the same way. In 2021, the license plate “score” was a blowout — 318 to 97 in favor of the Bronx Bombers, according to the DMV.
The initial charge for the custom plates is $60, with an annual renewal fee of $31.25 in addition to the regular renewal fee, the DMV said.
The team plates have existed since 1993.
