Clay Holmes hasn’t outright lost the Yankees’ closer job, but he will now likely be getting fewer opportunities.

Manager Aaron Boone told reporters Wednesday that he plans to get “creative” with the closer role and go with pitchers based on matchups as Holmes has taken some big lumps.

Holmes, Boone added, would still be in the mix for those matchups.

When asked if Luis Gil or Clarke Schmidt would be late-inning options, Boone said, “Never say never.”

It’s been a brutal stretch for the right-hander, who yielded a walk-off grand slam to the Rangers on Tuesday night in his league-leading 11th-blown save of the year.

In 17 second-half appearances, Holmes has a 4.50 ERA.

The Post’s Greg Joyce reported that Tommy Kahnle, Luke Weaver and Jake Cousins are the top candidates to fill in at closer if Holmes doesn’t pitch in save situations.
