MINNEAPOLIS — The Yankees are adding a fresh arm, and a second lefty to their bullpen in the process.
Nick Ramirez had his contract selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, joining the Yankees at Target Field a night after their bullpen was forced to cover 5 ⅓ innings in the midst of 16 games in 16 days.
The Yankees optioned fellow reliever Greg Weissert, who threw 39 pitches in relief Monday, to Triple-A to make room on the 26-man roster.
They already had an open spot on the 40-man roster, so they did not need to make a move there.
Ramirez, a 33-year-old lefty who last appeared in the majors in 2021, impressed the Yankees in spring training after adding a slider to his arsenal.
With Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start the season, Ramirez posted a 1.74 ERA across 10 ⅓ innings.
Ramirez, who last pitched on Friday and can go more than one inning, joins Wandy Peralta as the second left-hander in the Yankees bullpen.
Weissert, who allowed a solo home run to Joey Gallo on Monday, had a 2.08 ERA in 4 ⅓ innings since being called up earlier this month.
