BOSTON – Jasson Dominguez is headed for Tommy John surgery.
The Yankees top prospect, who impressed during an eight-game cameo earlier this month before finding out he had torn his UCL, will undergo the right elbow surgery on Wednesday, manager Aaron Boone said Thursday.
Dr. Keith Meister will perform the surgery, which is expected to keep Dominguez sidelined for nine to 10 months.
The 20-year-old outfielder had a strong debut in the big leagues, crushing four home runs with a .980 OPS before he landed on the injured list.
Dominguez had been gathering opinions from doctors over the last few days before settling on Tommy John.
With Dominguez unlikely to be available to them until June or July, the Yankees will likely need to add at least a stop gap center fielder this offseason.
