Franchy Cordero is back in The Bronx.
The Yankees recalled Cordero on Friday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Jake Bauers, who landed on the injured list with a left rotator cuff contusion.
This marks Cordero’s third stint with the Yankees this season, the last one coming for a one-game cameo in Seattle after Harrison Bader got injured and just before Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson returned from the injured list.
After providing a surprising impact for the Yankees to start the season, with four home runs in his first seven games, Cordero immediately cooled off in a big way.
Over his last 12 games with the Yankees, he hit 1-for-29 with 14 strikeouts and no walks.
In 34 games this season with SWB, Cordero was batting .345 with a 1.082 OPS, seven home runs and 28 strikeouts.
He recently missed time on the IL with a shoulder issue but returned on July 1 to put himself in position for this call-up.
The Yankees could have chosen Estevan Florial for a promotion, but that would have meant opening another spot on the 40-man roster in addition to the one they needed to activate Carlos Rodon from the 60-day IL for his season debut on Friday – which they did by transferring Nestor Cortes to the 60-day IL.
Bauers, meanwhile, received a cortisone injection on Thursday and was feeling “significantly better” on Friday, according to Aaron Boone.
Boone expects to have a better idea of how long Bauers might be out over the coming days.
