PITTSBURGH — Three innings after a frightening scene involving a teammate, the Yankees clawed their way back to victory.
Entering the ninth inning Friday night trailing the Pirates by two runs, the Yankees mounted a four-run rally to pull off a 7-5 win at PNC Park.
The late comeback, which got an assist from the Pirates defense, which wiped out a potential game-ending double play, came after Yankees reliever Anthony Misiewicz was drilled in the head by a 100.6 mph line drive off the bat of Ji Hwan Bae in the sixth inning.
As the ball ricocheted into right field, Misiewicz crumpled to the ground and was tended to by trainers.
He eventually stood up and was taken off the field on a cart, with a towel over the left side of his face.
The Yankees later announced that Misiewicz was alert and oriented.
He was assessed by Pirates team doctors and was transported to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was set to undergo further testing.
Trailing 5-3 going into the ninth, the Yankees loaded the bases with no outs off former Mets reliever Colin Holderman, on singles by DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge and a walk to Gleyber Torres.
One out later, Estevan Florial fought back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk that drove in a run and made it 5-4.
Anthony Volpe then hit a hard ground ball to shortstop that should have ended the game.

But after Liover Pegeuro flipped to second base, Bae’s throw to first bounced past Alfonso Rivas, allowing Volpe to reach safely and two runs to score.
Oswald Peraza then singled and Oswaldo Cabrera followed with an RBI single to pad the Yankees’ lead.
Former Pirate Clay Holmes slammed the door shut for the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth.

Gerrit Cole, in his first time back on the mound at PNC Park since he last pitched for the Pirates in 2017, labored through five innings on 93 pitches, but was able to limit the damage to two runs.
He tied a season-high with three walks.
