Oswaldo Cabrera showed up to Tuesday’s Subway Series with a new accessory –– his grandmother’s tooth.
The utilityman –– who entered the game as a right field defensive replacement for Jake Bauers during the Yankees’ 7-6 win over the Mets at Citi Field –– has his Grandma Anna’s tooth hanging from a necklace.
“My mom told me to wear it,” Cabrera told the YES Network before the game. “Whatever my mom tells me to do, I’m going to do.”
This statement may not be all that surprising to some, though.
Cabrera has been known for his jewelry choices in the past.
Cabrera, who wears No. 95, also sports an imitation-pearl and color-beaded necklace that was gifted to him by Milton Ramos –– a former 2014 third-round pick of the Mets.
Ramos now has a brand called PawGripz where the necklaces are available.
Cabrera’s teammate, pitcher Ron Marinaccio, said it’s all part of what makes Cabrera who he is.
“I like it,” Marinaccio told the New York Times in 2022. “It’s his thing. That’s what I like about Oswaldo. He’s not really worried about what anybody else is thinking. He’s doing his own thing, and he’s having fun doing it.”
Perhaps this new necklace addition will help Cabrera, who went 0-for-1 in his only at-bat of the Yankees’ win, get his swagger back following this year’s slump.
While Cabrera, who is hitting just .195, entered the 2023 season as the starting left fielder, he was shipped down to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on June 1, looking to rediscover his offensive spark.
Cabrera was put back on the active roster quickly after getting sent down because of Greg Allen’s hip flexor injury.
