ARLINGTON, Texas — Jake Bauers made a spectacular first impression in a Yankees uniform — but it knocked him out of the game.
Bauers, after being called up to the active roster earlier on Saturday, made an outstanding catch to end the bottom of the first inning at Globe Life Field and save a run.
But he did so by sliding and slamming into the left-field wall at full speed, and he stayed down on the warning track after making the highlight-reel grab.
Trainers, manager Aaron Boone and teammates raced out to check on Bauers, whose right knee and face appeared to take the brunt of the collision with the wall. He remained on the ground for a few minutes as trainers worked on his right leg.
Bauers eventually walked off the field on his own, but he was replaced by Aaron Hicks in left field to start the bottom of the second inning.
It was Bauers’ offense that had earned him a promotion back to the big leagues — Saturday was his first MLB action since 2021 — to replace Franchy Cordero on the Yankees’ roster.
The 27-year-old was batting .319 with a 1.271 OPS and nine home runs in 21 games.
A former top-100 prospect with the Rays, Bauers has hit .213 with a .655 OPS in 328 major league games across parts of three different seasons.
But he said on Friday that improving his mental perspective has recently allowed him to play up to his potential.
“I’ve struggled mentally over the course of my career so far,” Bauers said. “I did a lot of work on myself to get to a place where I feel like I’m in a good spot.”
