Gleyber Torres got bailed out, but he delivered an embarrassing moment he’ll likely want back.
The Yankees second baseman dropped an easy pop up in the third inning of the team’s series opener against the Dodgers on Friday night in The Bronx, playing it way too casually.
After Gavin Lux grounded out to Torres to start the inning, Enrique Hernandez hit a pop up to shallow right field.
Torres jogged toward it without much urgency and tried to catch it with some style by using one hand all the way down by his chest instead of camping underneath.
But he botched it and was charged with the error.
Heavy boos rained around Yankee Stadium after the play.
It marked Torres’ eighth error this year — the most among all MLB second basemen.
Pitcher Cody Poteet subsequently picked off Hernandez on first base, however, and later forced Shohei Ohtani into a line-out to end the inning.
So Torres’ head-scratching gaffe didn’t end up costing the Yankees.
But Torres has been criticized in the past for the casual manner he makes plays in the field.
And this time, it hurt him.
