NextImg:Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton 118.7 mph line drive as hot spring continues

Noteworthy items from the Yankees’ Grapefruit League action on Saturday:

Giancarlo Stanton’s encouraging spring came with a reminder Saturday that he can still light up Statcast.

The DH hit a missile of a line drive back up the middle on an 87 mph cutter that came off the bat at 118.7 mph.

Giancarlo Stanton, who recently hit three homers against the Pirates, belted a 118.7 mph line drive up the middle during Saturday’s 6-6 exhibition tie vs. the Phillies. Kim Klement Neitzel-USA TODAY Sports

Non-roster infielder Kevin Smith, fighting for a bench job, committed an error for the second straight day.

This one was a throwing error at shortstop on a tough ground ball that he likely would have been better off eating.

Oswaldo Cabrera, expected to make the team as a utilityman (if not its starting third baseman if DJ LeMahieu is not ready to start the season), continued to swing a hot bat, roping a two-run homer off Phillies reliever Connor Brogdon.

After starting the spring 1-for-23 through nine games, Cabrera is 9-for-24 over his past 11 games.

Marcus Stroman will make his final start of the spring against the Pirates in Bradenton, Fla., while a split-squad group of Yankees will take on the Diablos Rojos in Mexico City.
