NextImg:Yankees get big boost from call-up Randy Vasquez in win over Marlins

MIAMI — In what might have amounted to an audition for the rest of the season, Randy Vásquez did not look like a savior.

But he did not look like a weak spot, either.

Vásquez was not brilliant but was not battered, which is plenty good enough at this juncture of the season for the Yankees.

The righty did enough to help his club to a 9-4 victory over the Marlins at loanDepot Park on Friday night, when an already-thin Yankees rotation shrunk a bit more.

Hours before first pitch, Nestor Cortes was moved to the injured list with a left rotator cuff strain that likely will end his season.

Cortes joined Carlos Rodon (hamstring strain) on the IL, which also houses Frankie Montas (right shoulder surgery), who likely will not throw a pitch this season.

Domingo German also will not be seen on the mound again this year after leaving the team to tend to an alcohol problem.

At the moment, Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt are surrounded by the underwhelming Luis Severino (8.06 ERA) and the unknown Jhony Brito and Vásquez.

The desperate Yankees looked to Vásquez, who did not look like an ace but threw enough strikes to keep the club afloat for a fourth time in four career starts.

“I feel confident that I can find a way to help the team,” Vásquez, whose ERA sits at 1.89 in 19 major league innings, said through interpreter Marlon Abreu. “Anytime I’m given an opportunity to pitch here, I want to do my best.”

After two innings from opener Ian Hamilton, Vásquez entered a game the Yankees were leading, 4-2, and threw 3 ⅔ innings in which he allowed two runs on three hits and a walk.

The Yankees’ offense smacked around Marlins pitching, so all the righty had to do was survive.

“Randy did everything we needed him to do,” manager Aaron Boone said of the rookie, who was pitching on eight days rest and for the first time this season out of the bullpen. “He threw strikes. He came in right away with a lead and did that. He used everything.”

The 24-year-old did not miss many bats, striking out two and causing just four whiffs on 28 Marlins swings.

But he pitched to contact and kept Miami off-balance with a six-pitch mix.

“He’s a bulldog. He’s not afraid of anybody,” Aaron Judge said of Vásquez, who allowed runs on a Jake Burger RBI double (in the fourth) and a Josh Bell homer (in the sixth). “Attacks the batter, which, especially when you got a lead, you got to do that.”

Vásquez has bounced up and down this year, making one major league start in each month from May through August.

He has yet to implode, lasting as long as 5 ⅔ innings and never surrendering more than two runs.

He has been good enough — and the Yankees have enough rotation issues — to justify a longer look.

“Every start is an opportunity for me to learn more and feel more comfortable at this level,” Vásquez said.
