NextImg:Yankees end wild road trip with sweep of Reds in Luis Severino’s return

CINCINNATI — The vibes have shifted around the Yankees so much lately that they can sit Aaron Judge and still finish off a ridiculous road trip in style.

Even without the red-hot Judge on a day when the first pitch was thrown at 11:37 a.m., the Yankees offense kept humming and Luis Severino looked strong in an encouraging season debut on the way to a 4-1 win over the Red on Sunday at Great American Ball Park.

The three-game sweep of the Reds (19-27) capped off a seven-game trip that featured a heavy dose of drama and absurdity, but also six wins for the surging Yankees (29-20), who have now won 11 of their last 14 games.

Harrison Bader gave the Yankees the lead in the fifth inning with a two-run homer off Hunter Greene and Gleyber Torres added a solo shot in the sixth.

That was more than enough offense for the Yankees’ pitching staff, led by Severino in his return from a strained lat that cost him the first month and a half of the season.

The right-hander tossed 4 ⅔ innings and gave up just one run while striking out five.

He was limited to 75 pitches as he continued to build up his workload after making only two rehab starts.

Severino also built up his velocity as the game went on, averaging 96.7 mph with his fastball but topping out at 98.6 mph on a strikeout of Kevin Newman in the fifth inning.

The one run that Severino allowed came in controversial fashion in the first inning.

After walking leadoff hitter Jonathan India on four pitches, Severino got two outs and then nearly got the third on a slicing fly ball to right field.

Jake Bauers made a sliding attempt and dropped it, with first-base umpire Nestor Ceja calling it a foul ball just as India was rounding second.

The Reds challenged the play and replays showed that Bauers first touched it in fair territory, so it was overturned and called a double for Spencer Steer, with the umpires allowing India to score (he had continued to run home even after Ceja called it foul in real-time).

But Aaron Boone’s argument — which led to his quick ejection — was that India should not have been awarded home, since the call on the field was foul and Bauers had no incentive to get up and throw home.

Fortunately for the Yankees, the run did not end up costing them, thanks to their offense finally solving the hard-throwing Greene, who struck out 10 over seven innings.

They added one more run off him in the seventh when Greg Allen pinch-ran at first base, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Anthony Volpe’s double.

After scoreless outings from Albert Abreu, Jimmy Cordero and Wandy Peralta bridged the gap to the ninth inning, Clay Holmes loaded the bases with two outs before securing the save — his first since April 12.
