MIAMI — The Yankees were showing signs of life — and signs of annoyance.
In the eighth inning of their eventual 8-7 loss to the Marlins, the Yankees led, 7-2, when Anthony Volpe was punched out by home plate umpire James Hoye.
The pitch appeared to be on the bottom of the strike zone, though strike two was a bit underneath the zone.
After strike three, Volpe bent his knees and looked down in frustration before walking back to the dugout, where apparently plenty of chirping was going on.
After a few moments, Hoye ejected assistant hitting coach Brad Wilkerson, who was tossed for the first time this season.
Manager Aaron Boone went on to the field to talk to Hoye but was not tossed, which might qualify as progress for the AL leader with six ejections this season.
The week has seen plenty of umpire frustration from the Yankees, which included a Boone ejection Monday in which he argued with Laz Diaz and mimicked the ump’s strikeout call.
