NextImg:Yankees add Jeter Downs, Red Sox bust named for Derek Jeter

The Yankees have a Jeter again.

The club claimed infielder Jeter Downs — named for Derek Jeter — off waivers from the Nationals on Tuesday.

Downs, 25, is best known for being part of the package (along with new Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo) that the Dodgers sent to the Red Sox in the Mookie Betts blockbuster in 2020.

He was a top-100 prospect at the time, but has struggled since then, leading to him being designated for assignment for the second time in his career last week.

A former first-round pick of the Reds in 2017, Downs made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2022, batting .154 with a .427 OPS in 14 games.

He played six games for the Nationals last season, batting 2-for-5 with two steals.

Downs, who has experience at shortstop, second base and third base, has one minor league option remaining, giving him a chance to provide the Yankees some depth.

They had three open spots on their 40-man roster, so Downs takes one of them (at least for now) while they continue to pursue free-agent additions this offseason.

After hitting just .193 across parts of two seasons (180 games) with the Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate in 2021 and 2022, Downs was DFA’d last December and picked up by the Nationals.

He then hit .236 with a .736 OPS in 51 games with Washington’s Triple-A affiliate in 2023.

Upon arriving to the Red Sox after the Betts trade in 2020, Downs explained his connection to Jeter.

“[My mom] just loved Jeter and how he was and the way he played the game, so she gave me the name,” Downs said. “I idolized him, just the way he played, the way he went about the game and the things he did, how he was respected by every single team. It was pretty cool, as a kid — I don’t care what team you [root for], it was just cool to watch a guy like that play the game.”
