Scott Porter is reflecting on the time he was nearly cast as Captain America.
Appearing on Monday night’s (June 9) episode of Watch What Happens Live to promote the new season of Ginny & Georgia, Porter confirmed that he was among the “final four” actors in the running to play Captain America, a role that ultimately went to Chris Evans.
“Who else can be Captain America than Chris Evans?” Porter asked. “I was not mad at all and I watched all the Avengers movies. I’m a huge nerd and the man just crushed it.”
According to the actor, those final four actors included himself, Evans, Wilson Bethel (who later joined the MCU in Daredevil), and Mike Vogel. While there are no hard feelings now, Porter said it initially felt like a “kick in the nuts” to get that close only to lose out on the role.
“That was, like, a big, I’m bent over, sobbing, heaving. Yeah, it was bad,” he admitted. “Because all these press outlets had put my head on Captain America’s body and I started to buy in. I was like, ‘I can do this. Oh, no, no. Yeah, I can’t.’”
Porter might not have gained Marvel fame, but he will be forever known (and loved) for playing Jason Street on Friday Night Lights, the star high school quarterback who suffered an injury that left him paralyzed during the first home game of the season.
As a Friday Night Lights super-fan, host Andy Cohen couldn’t help but ask some questions about the iconic show, including which episode was Porter’s favorite.
“‘Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch Changes,’ which is the first time Jason Street got back on a football field after his injury and they throw the football around all night,” he said. “It was me and Taylor [Kitsch] and Gaius [Charles] and Zach [Gilford], for the first time since the pilot, so I wasn’t as isolated as I was the rest of the season. That’s my personal favorite.”
Cohen replied, “I’m getting a little choked up just thinking about that scene.”
Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
