David Henrie and Selena Gomez are stepping back into the roles that made them stars in the first trailer for Disney+’s highly anticipated Wizards of Waverly Place reboot.
In the teaser for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, Justin Russo (Henrie) gets a surprise visit from his sister Alex Russo (Gomez), who tasks him with training a “stubborn” and “rebellious” albeit powerful young wizard named Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), who holds the fate of the world in her hands.
Justin — now married with two children, living in the suburbs, and no longer working as the headmaster at WizTech — promises his wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) that nothing will change now that they have a wizard in the house. But, naturally, Billie gets the Russo children involved in all sorts of magical hijinks.
Despite Billie’s habit of getting into trouble, Justin promises to stick by her side no matter what. “You made a mistake. It’s part of growing up. And in our family, you don’t get kicked out for making a mistake,” he says in the trailer.
Henrie first announced the Wizards spinoff in January of this year, revealing that he will not only reprise his beloved role in the show, but he will also executive produce alongside Gomez, who will guest star in the first episode. Since then, Henrie has also teased several other cameos including David DeLuise, who played his onscreen father Jerry Russo, Maria Canals-Barrera, who played his onscreen mom Theresa Russo, and, most recently, Gregg Sulkin, who played Alex’s boyfriend/werewolf Mason.
Plus, Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel and That’s So Raven star Raven-Symoné, who previously spearheaded her own reboot Raven’s Home, will direct episodes throughout the first season.
The original Wizards of Waverly Place ran for four seasons between 2007 and 2012, and even landed its own spinoff movie Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie in 2009. The sitcom followed the Russo children as they trained to become wizards all while navigating normal teenage experiences.
The first two episodes of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 8:00 p.m. E.T. on Disney Channel. The first nine episodes will begin streaming on Disney+ and Disney Channel On Demand the next day.
