NextImg:Wimbledon predictions: Andrey Rublev, Cam Norrie among best long shot picks

The bookmakers see the 2023 Wimbledon Championships as a two-horse race on the men’s side of the draw.

Seven-time winner and three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic is the odds-on favorite to win the tournament at -165, and his main competition — at least according to the bookies — will be World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who is +340 to win his first Wimbledon.

No other player is shorter than +1600 at FanDuel.

Can anybody from down the board upset the odds in the year’s third Grand Slam?

Until he gets over the hump, the betting market will always offer strong prices on Andrey Rublev at Grand Slams.

The 25-year-old Russian has been ranked inside the top 10 for the better part of three years now and has plenty of trophies on his mantle, but he just can’t seem to break through on the biggest stage.

Rublev has been to seven quarterfinals in Grand Slams and lost them all.

Wimbledon is the only Slam where Rublev hasn’t made it to the final eight, but he’s got a good record on grass in his career and is coming off a trip to the final at ATP Halle (a 500-level grass tournament), so I’m not going to be deterred by that.

And I won’t be put off by the notion that Rublev can’t win on the big stage, because it’s not really true.

Rublev has won a Masters 1000 title this year and has been to finals in two others, so it’s not like he can’t compete against this level of competition.

Rublev is a top-10 player in the world but he’s being priced like he’s closer to 20th.

This is a great price on a player with legitimate win equity at Wimbledon.

A semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2022, Cam Norrie has been a little less consistent than he’d like in 2023 and that’s giving us the opportunity to buy low on a player that is a real threat to go deep at any Grand Slam.

Known for his fitness, movement and ability to rally, Norrie is the type of player who can frustrate opponents (and bettors who go against him) because he’s perfectly fine with doing whatever it takes to hang around in matches and wait for his opportunity.

That makes him the type of player who can punch up against the elite players in this field, which is attractive at these kind of odds because in all likelihood you’ll need Norrie to pull a stunner or two if he’s going to get you to the window.

It’s been a while since Grigor Dimitrov went on a run at Wimbledon, but the Bulgarian is a former semifinalist at the Championships and is as experienced as just about any player in this field on the grass.

Dimitrov is also in a decent nick of form at the moment with 10 wins in his past 13 matches and a 4-1 record on grass in 2023.

The draw would have to fall apart for Dimitrov to have a real shot at lifting the trophy, but he’s one of a few long shots with realistic winning upside if things go off the rails.
