Dozens of titles are set to be removed from Disney+ and Hulu later this month as part of Disney’s cost-cutting plans.

On an earnings call earlier this month, Disney’s CFO Christine McCarthy announced the company’s plans to reevaluate its content library.

“We will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion,” McCarthy said, later adding, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation.”

A full list of the series and movies to be removed is now available, revealing a mix of fan-favorites and short-lived series such as Willow. The titles will be removed on May 26.

The announcement of one title’s removal in particular is sparking backlash on social media: Howard, a 2018 documentary about Howard Ashman, the legendary lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Disney classics such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. Ashman later died of AIDS in 1991.

The news comes just as Disney announced its plans to combine Hulu and Disney+ into a “one-app experience” by the end of 2023.

Though the apps will still be available separately, Disney+ plans to host Hulu’s content on its streaming app, allowing subscribers of both platforms to toggle between both content libraries on a single app.

This new model is set to launch before the end of the year.
