Task Episode 6 “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a river” opens with an 18-minute-long action set piece and ends on a bittersweet coda. Because of the number of major character deaths, wild twists, and tonal turnovers in last night’s Task, some viewers might be wondering if that’s it. Was last night’s Task the series finale of the HBO show? Are there any more episodes of Task?
Task was created by writer Brad Ingelsby, a Philly native and Villanova alum with a penchant for writing crime dramas set in his hometown. Ingelsby’s first major hit for HBO, Mare of Easttown, was also set in the iconoclastic suburb of Delco and dealt with similar themes of shame, forgiveness, and grace.
Task follows a depressed and grieving FBI agent named Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) who is called back into the field to head a ragtag task force hunting a group of criminals who are stealing from a violent gang called the Dark Hearts. As it turns out, the thieves aren’t all bad. In fact, they are led by the kind-hearted Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey), a trash collector and single dad who has noble intentions behind his targeted robberies. Task sets Tom and Robbie — and the many complex characters in both of their orbits — on a dramatic collision course.

As of right now, there are no official plans to make a second season of Task. Like Mare of Easttown, Task was envisioned as a limited series. However, that doesn’t mean creator and showrunner Brad Ingelsby is opposed to continuing the story. In fact, he’d love to.
“I’d love to do another season of Task if there’s an appetite for it,” Ingelsby said. “As long as people want to watch these stories, then I’ll continue to write them.”
Ingelsby also shared that he has no problem sticking to stories set in his hometown of Philly.
“You know, as long as people want to watch the shows about Delco, I’ll write them because I love writing about the people and the places that I grew up in,” he said. “I think I can write those characters with the confidence I can’t write if I was writing about characters from Maine or California or any other state.”
“I don’t have any wanderlust. I’ll be happy to stay home and do my thing, you know?”
So if people want more Task, they may yet get more Task! It’s up to HBO, not Ingelsby.
