Aitor Gabilondo’s Spanish thriller Muted features twisty surprises and a mind-blowing finale as it reveals the fate of ex-convict Sergio Ciscar (Arón Piper) who has been in prison for six years. Throughout the series, several major questions are posed: Did Sergio kill his parents? Will he ever reunite with his sister? And the ending answers them all while setting up an ambiguous reveal that has left viewers wanting more.
The show premiered all six episodes on May 19, 2023 on Netflix and immediately found itself on the Top 10 chart. As of now, the show is occupying the #6 spot among all television shows on the platform, which is a small drop from yesterday. Why is this important? Well, it means that people are watching the show – which is half the battle when it comes to renewals.
Along with Piper, the series stars Almudena Amor as psychologist Ana Dussel and Cristina Kovani, Manu Ríos, Aitor Luna, and Ramiro Blas in supporting roles.
Is Muted coming back for more? Here’s everything you need to know about the fate of the buzzy crime drama.
Unfortunately, Muted has not yet been renewed on Netflix. But don’t worry as the series is still new to the platform and if Netflix is interested in another season, it’ll be announced in the following months. However, there is one indicator that there won’t be another installment. Muted is listed as a limited series on the platform, which often means the complete story was told through six episodes. This is similar to the response to Netflix’s limited series Behind Her Eyes, which posed an ambiguous ending – that seemingly set up for more to come – but stuck with its six-episode order. Nevertheless, there are exceptions, such as Netflix’s latest (controversial) hit series Beef, for which the series creator told Rolling Stone that he has three seasons “mapped out.” (Netflix has not yet renewed the series.)
Gabilondo has not mentioned his hopes for future seasons, but he praised Netflix for supporting the series in the show’s press notes. The Muted creator said he had the “best” experience working with the streamer, for the first time. He added, “All series are a team effort, but in this case it is even more so. The contributions from Arón Piper, Almudena Amor and, above all, the spectacular directing work of Gabe Ibáñez, have improved the proposal. I’m looking forward to the series premiere.”

Verónica Fernández, Director of Content Originals at Netflix in Spain, said, “For Netflix, it has been a pleasure to accompany Aitor Gabilondo, Alea Media and the more than 240 professionals who have made this miniseries possible, where the world of Bilbao, home of the production, imbues us from the beginning.”
So, long story short… No, Muted has not been renewed for a second season. However, that could’ve been the plan from the start. If Netflix does decide to green-light another installment, it will be announced within the coming months. Stay tuned!
