After taking our stress levels to terrifying new heights, Hijack wrapped Season 1 with a suspenseful, high-stakes, deeply satisfying finale.
For seven episodes, Apple TV+‘s high-octane thriller starring Idris Elba followed his character Sam Nelson and passengers of hijacked Flight KA29 as they navigated their perilous reality in real time. During the seven-hour flight from Dubai to London, on-the-ground officials scrambled to avoid international tragedy while twist after twist — both on and off the plane — kept everyone on their toes.
Episode 7, “Brace Brace Brace,” unleashed unexpected chaos, answered our burning Episode 6 questions — mainly, who the heck is Holly Aird’s character, Amanda?! — and revealed the fate of Flight KA29. But after coming down from the wild ride, we can’t help but wonder if we’ve seen the last of Sam and Hijack‘s carefully crafted thrills.
Wondering if there will be a Hijack Season 2? Is Hijack a limited series? Or if Apple TV+ canceled or renewed the series? When chatting with Hijack‘s co-creators and EPs, writer George Kay and director Jim Field Smith about the finale, we asked about the future of the series and a potential Season 2.

Anyone who’s watched the Season 1 finale, “Brace Brace Brace,” knows that the episode wraps up Hijack‘s major storylines nicely, so the show would certainly work well as a limited series. But given the show’s quality and Elba’s captivating performance as Sam Nelson, it’s understandable why fans — myself included — might not want to say goodbye to Hijack just yet.
As of its Season 1 finale premiere day, August 2, Hijack had yet to be renewed or canceled by Apple TV+. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Hijack is a limited series. Though there aren’t currently any plans for Season 2, co-creators George Kay and Jim Field Smith didn’t fully shut down the idea when speaking with Decider over Zoom.
“There’s lots of stuff that — for as much as the series tries to answer its own questions that it sets up within itself as a limited series — I think there’s room for that character, you know, for sure ongoing. And there’s also things that are unanswered from Season 1, so we don’t know at the minute. We’re just enjoying the show,” Field Smith said.
“The appropriate answer is it’s up in the air,” Kay added with a greatly-appreciated plane pun.
So what could a Hijack Season 2 even look like? We have some ideas below, but be warned Hijack Season 1 finale spoilers (and weirdly some Prison Break spoilers) lie ahead.
Since Hijack Season 2 hasn’t been green-lit by Apple TV+ yet, there are no concrete plans for new episodes. But I presented the following possibility to Field Smith and Kay: “I don’t think there should necessarily should be another hijack — considering there have already been two! I don’t think we need to go the Prison Break route where Michael just kept breaking out of more prisons, but I wouldn’t mind watching Sam get called in to help negotiate and diffuse other high-stakes situations.”
After I accidentally spoiled Prison Break for Kay (he only watched the first and best season), Field Smith noted that Elba’s character Sam has a lot of potential and reminded me there are still several unanswered questions from Season 1 that could be explored down the line.
“If there was a Season 2, I don’t think it’ll start one second after the end of Season 1,” Field Smith said. “Yeah he needs a break. Whatever happens, he needs a break. We can maybe get Prison Break Season 7,” Kay joked.
By the end of Season 1’s finale, Elba’s Sam does look genuinely exhausted — and for good reason. I put forth a scenario in which this man just brings that jewelry home to his wife and retires early, to which Kay laughed, “Yeah, a real-time lie-down.”
Whether we see Sam assisting with more plane situations or he called in to negotiate on the ground, with his people skills and Daniel’s (Max Beesley) connections, the Hijack potential feels endless. However, those men are also in love with the same woman, so those relationships would likely need to be explored in a potential Season 2. And hopefully, we’d finally get to see Sam and Kai share the screen, among other things.
