The Rangers have had three general managers over the past 25 years, and the one thing that Glen Sather (2000-15), Jeff Gorton (2015-21) and Chris Drury (2021-) have had in common is that not one of them has ever signed a drafted forward to a second contract longer than two years.

Defensemen, they’ve been kind of a different story with Marc Staal getting a five-year deal off entry level, Ryan McDonagh and Brady Skjei getting second contracts of six years and Adam Fox earning a seven-year extension.

But forwards? Ryan Callahan got two years on his second contract. Brandon Dubinsky got two years. Derek Stepan got two years. Chris Kreider got two years. Carl Hagelin got two years. Artem Anisimov got two years. Pavel Buchnevich got two years. Filip Chytil got two years. Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafrenière got two years apiece. J.T. Miller got one.

One bridge after another.
