The Patriots don’t want to part ways with all of the Belichicks.
Bill Belichick’s sons, Steve and Brian, have received offers to remain on New England’s coaching staff under new head coach Jerod Mayo, according to Sports Illustrated.
Steve is a linebackers coach for the Patriots, while Brian is a safeties coach.
Time will tell whether the brothers will stay in Foxborough or potentially follow their dad to his next coaching stop.
The elder Belichick, 71, is a free agent after a mutual breakup with owner Robert Kraft last week.
The Patriots (4-13) just had the worst season of Belichick’s 24-year run as the team’s head coach, missing the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time under Belichick, whose reported tension with Kraft and Kraft’s son Jonathan paved the way for the split.
New England’s offense struggled mightily in 2023, with former first-round pick Mac Jones throwing 12 interceptions in 11 starts before he lost the starting quarterback job to Bailey Zappe.
According to ESPN, Belichick waited so long to bench Jones as “a f–k you to Kraft” after ownership shut down Belichick’s interest in trading Jones last offseason.
Perhaps Kraft did not want to take more quarterback advice from Belichick after the coach told him Tom Brady “couldn’t play anymore” before winning another Super Bowl with the Buccaneers, per ESPN.
The most prevalent speculation about Belichick’s landing spot is related to the Cowboys after their stunning playoff letdown at home against the Packers on Sunday.
Cowboys fans are outraged after trailing by 32 points early in the fourth quarter, and some pundits have called for McCarthy to be fired.
Should Jerry Jones move on from McCarthy after four seasons, it wouldn’t be surprising if one of his first phone calls were to Belichick.
