NextImg:Why Trump won’t be sending the National Guard to NYC

We don’t expect President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard in New York City for a host of reasons — not least because we’re taking his suggestions seriously, but not literally.

That is, when Trump last week discussed the very real success of his intervention in Washington, DC, policing, he mused that Chicago could be next, “and then we’ll help with New York.”

Just in case, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Monday reportedly told Attorney General Pam Bondi it’s not needed, since crime is down and Gotham remains far safer than other big US cities.

Shootings are at an all-time low, while burglaries, robberies and felony assaults are all trending down, too.

The Big Apple’s main problem is with the no-bail law and the state government’s other blows to the justice system, an issue Trump flagged Monday.

The Guard can’t help much with that — and didn’t when Gov. Kathy Hochul sent it in to help out, as she’s apparently pointed out to the prez.

Cities such as Chicago, which held its spot as the murder capital of America for the 13th year running in 2024, might benefit — except Mayor Brandon Johnson and Gov. JB Pritzker care too much about ideology to work with the Trump administration to save their citizens’ lives.

We suspect pushing them to make that obvious was a big reason Trump floated the idea.

And if Zohran Mamdani wins in November and starts unwinding Mayor Eric Adams’ and Tisch’s hard-won progress, then Trump will no doubt start baiting him.

The president’s too smart to mess with success — but don’t expect him to resist any opportunity to expose what his enemies really stand for.
