NextImg:Why I’ll never look back after upgrading to a Purple Mattress

Like many products, long gone are the days of needing to shop for your new mattress in stores. Instead of lugging yourself to the nearest department store and hopping around from bed to bed to make sure your new investment is just right, you can depend on in-depth reviews like this one.

If you’re on the hunt for something a bit different (not memory foam or even a traditional spring mattress), look no further than Purple. For the last few weeks, my wife and I have been testing the brand’s original mattress, and we’ve truly never slept better. But, are Purple mattresses good?

All Purple mattresses are designed with an adaptive “GelFlex grid” that made the brand famous and offers a soft and supportive foundation that molds to your body — this unique material is similar to memory foam but doesn’t trap heat. While the company was established in 2016, founders Tony and Terry Pearce first came up with this innovative idea in 1989 and has been used in hospital beds for burn victims and other critical patients ever since.

To put the brand to the test, I decided to swap my old mattress and try out the Purple Mattress that started it all.

Cons:

The Purple Mattress has a medium-firm softness and is available in sizes twin to California King and even a Split King option. So what about the Purple mattress price? Prices range from $999 to $2,198. While the website states that it’s most ideal for back sleepers, I’m a side sleeper and my wife sleeps in every which way.

The 2-inch GelFlex Grid, made of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, will seamlessly adapt to any sleep position and cradle your pressure points so you and your partner can sleep soundly. The mattress also offers significant airflow and is supported by a foam base for stability and motion isolation.

Plus, there’s really no room for buyer’s remorse since the company offers a 100-night trial just in case you decide you’d like to return it for any reason and a 10-year Purple Mattress warranty if anything happens later on. And if the price tag is a bit out of budget, you can also take advantage of financing with Affirm. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Crafted right here in the United States (primarily in Georgia and Utah), the brand only uses non-toxic materials that are Certified Clean Air GOLD and hypoallergenic.

Note: instead of a Purple Mattress sale, the brand is just giving stuff away. For a limited time, you can get a free gift ($300 worth of free pillows, sheets and a mattress protector) when you purchase one of the brand’s other top-rated mattresses, PurpleFlex or PurpleRenew, now through Nov. 3.

After nearly a decade of sleeping on a memory foam mattress that shares the name of a friendly ghost, my wife and I decided it was time to get a new one.

A lot can change in 10 years! My wife and I got married, welcomed our first child into the world last year and even bought our first home. While chasing around a one-year-old is a job in itself, with my wife’s 13-hour shifts as an Interventional Radiology Technician and the long hours I put into my role as a Commerce Partnerships Manager here at The Post — getting a good night’s sleep is something we take pretty seriously.

The unboxing was pretty easy because it didn’t come in a box! The mattress arrived (in five business days) in a long purple tube, similar to a long duffle bag.

While peeling off the vacuum-sealed shrink wrap was easy, lifting this queen-size mattress up the stairs to our bedroom was pretty hard as it was quite heavy.

Once we got it into place, we let it expand, which took less than eight hours. However, as recommended by the brand, I would suggest doing this directly over your bedframe so you don’t need to deal with moving a larger, just as heavy object onto the frame later on.

After letting it expand over the course of the day, we threw some sheets on it and put it to the test: this was the most excited I was to sleep in a long time!

We’ve been sleeping on the Purple Mattress for about a month now.

One of the first things I noticed was the incredible cooling sensation. For context, I’m a six-foot-tall, 225-pound guy, who naturally runs hot (and often sweats in the middle of winter). My wife, on the other hand, will reach for a blanket when we’re sitting on the couch, even in the dead of summer. Selfishly, I was very excited about this cooling feature!

Purple boasts that they are among the “coolest” options (in terms of temperature) out there, but I did not expect to feel, dare I say it, cold. Keep in mind, it was about 68 degrees Fahrenheit outside. It’s not a secret that my old memory foam mattress retained heat, but I did not expect this to be as significantly different.

To provide a comprehensive review of the mattress, I evaluated based on the following criteria: overall comfort, support, motion transfer, and heat level.

Comfortability: The most important factor about this or any mattress, of course, is comfortability. While comfort is subjective, I paid attention to how my body felt before falling asleep and when I woke up in the morning. We felt like the Purple Mattress was just as comfortable, if not more, than our old memory foam one. There was really no break-in period, it was cozy upon first use.

Support: I kept different types of sleepers in mind for this criteria, which was fairly easy as I’m a side sleeper and my wife sleeps in many different positions. Overall, this mattress is very durable and my wife and I do not find ourselves colliding in the middle of the bed. Our bodies feel very aligned when lying down and it gives support where we need it and comfort where we don’t. However, it seems that we lose out on a bit of durability towards the end of the mattress. When I sit on the end of the bed and put my socks and shoes on, I find that it dips a bit. For some, this may be a benefit as it allows sleepers to get in and out of bed easier.

Motion Transfer: When sharing a bed with a partner, motion transfer is really a make-or-break situation so I paid special attention here. I’m happy to report that after doing some testing by jumping and falling on the mattress, the other person felt minimal motion transfer, if at all.

Heat level: Whether you run hot or cold, this is a mattress feature I knew was important to many. I paid attention to how my body felt while lounging in bed but also made note if I woke up in the middle of the night to any temperature issues. For a couple where one partner prefers the cold and the other does not, the cooling aspect of this option allows both of us to bundle up and get cozy under a nice comforter. This may be my favorite aspect of the Purple Mattress, as I no longer wake up in the middle of the night to two off my side of the bedding when I get hot.

Overall, we prefer this mattress to our previous memory foam mattress.

Not only does the reduced temperature help regulate my body heat, making for a more comfortable night’s sleep, but the minimal motion transfer between my wife and I helps us sleep more peacefully now that we don’t feel each other toss and turn so much.

As mentioned, while my wife sleeps in every position under the sun (well, moon) I primarily sleep on my side, but no matter the position, the Purple Mattress has given us support where we want it and allows us to sink in where we need it, providing that perfect balance of soft and firm. After a day or two, any aches and pains we used to have from our old mattress disappeared.

It didn’t take the full 100 nights for us to know this mattress is absolutely worth it for us. The price is comparable to competitors (if not better) and in my opinion, much more comfortable.

While buying a new mattress is a big decision (after all, we spend a third of our lives sleeping), going with a product with incredible reviews was a leading factor in our decision and was worth the price tag. We also felt minimal pressure due to the brand’s incredible 100-night trial, just in case we didn’t feel like it was a good fit.

If you’re in the market for something similar to a memory foam mattress but better, consider Purple Mattress — you won’t regret it! With over 22,000 five-star reviews, what do you have to lose?
