The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg defended French President Emmanuel Macron after a viral video showed his wife, Brigitte Macron, seemingly shoving or slapping his face.
The EGOT-winner shut down her co-hosts’ debate as they began to speculate about the couple’s potentially “problematic” relationship.
“This kind of stuff bothers me because people make decisions about stuff they don’t know anything about. Because, having been on the other side of this, I find it intrusive,” she admitted. “Because no one ever says, ‘Well, what happened?’ And when you say, ‘Well this is what happened, we were fooling around,’ whatever, people don’t take you at your word. For me, it’s uncomfortable.”
Goldberg noted at the top of the conversation that Emmanuel had claimed the incident was “being overblown by the media.” According to The Guardian, the French President told reporters in Hanoi, Vietnam, that he and his wife were “joking around, as we do quite often.”
Joy Behar was the first to point out that the couple have an “odd relationship” and called out their 25-year age difference. “That is really a big difference,” she commented.

Sara Haines also reminded The View audience that the couple first met when Emmanuel was a 15-year-old student at a private school in France and Brigitte was his teacher. He was later sent to a different school after his parents learned the nature of their relationship, per Time.
But Goldberg took issue with Haines noting the couple have an “interesting power dynamic here that could be problematic.”
“What does any of that have to do with this?” Goldberg fired back.
She then attempted to demonstrate with Haines what exactly she thought happened between the French President and his wife. “I’m sorry what I saw – and maybe I’m crazy – but I saw someone doing this,” she said.
The show aired the viral clip once again as she tried to demonstrate on Haines, but Haines could be seen noticeably leaning away from Goldberg during her attempt.
“I did not see that, I saw embarrassment,” Haines maintained.
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
