Whoopi Goldberg is here to remind The View fans that the show is still without writers during the ongoing WGA strike. During today’s episode, Goldberg once again pointed out that the show is carrying on without its writers’ room, so she’ll be reading off of notecards for the foreseeable future.
“So, you know, I keep saying that we are in the midst of a writers’ strike, so we have to write stuff down and we’re supposed to say it,” Goldberg began, before explaining why she was looking down at her notes more than usual these days.
“That’s why I keep reading off the card, ’cause I can’t remember anything,” she told viewers. “So we can’t really do our usual in-studio heritage month feature, so I have to speak it.”
After highlighting The View‘s “month-long celebration” of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Goldberg encouraged viewers to visit the show’s social platforms, consulting an index card in below her for exact details.
When she closed out her AAPI month callout, Goldberg was met with a round of applause from the in-studio audience, but she quickly brushed off the praise.
“That wasn’t that good, come on,” she said. “I mean, I could have read it better. I know I could have done a better job. But you know, it’s easier when you have writers, but since we don’t, I just have to do it this way.”

Goldberg has been quick to mention the strike since it first began earlier this month. During a May 3 broadcast of The View, she lead with the news of the strike, opening the show by saying, “It is day two of the writers strike, and that means we’re still writing things on cards and, hopefully, if we’re not sure what’s going on, we will ask the amazing Brian over there,” per Entertainment Weekly.
Goldberg was referring to producer Brian Teta, whom she continued to praise as she added, “Yes, a little hand for Brian. Thank you, Brian!”
EW reported at the time that The View “will continuing airing new episodes for the foreseeable future, as it is primarily an unscripted show, and only a couple members of the show’s writing staff were impacted.”
In other words, get used to Goldberg’s notecards — looks like they’re here to stay.
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
