Whoopi Goldberg‘s mysterious absence from The View has finally been explained.
The television host revealed via her Instagram stories that she has been traveling to Rome and Vatican City, where she said she’s had “the most exquisite experience.”
“This is very exciting. I’m not really saying what we’re doing yet because I want to savor this experience,” she said.
“So, yeah, remember I said I was here and we’re looking at all these different things?” she said. “I think I forgot to mention, I met the Pope today. It was pretty remarkable.”
Despite the major reveal, Goldberg didn’t share how Pope Francis would be involved in the “exciting” project she was reportedly working on.
Her fellow View co-hosts have been similarly tight-lipped about what she’s been up to during her travels. While Joy Behar shared that Goldberg has been absent on the show to work on a mysterious project, they have not revealed what the nature of the project is. Whatever it is, the special segment is scheduled to premiere on The View on Monday, Oct. 16.
However, she did tease one possible project she could work on in the holy place – the highly anticipated third Sister Act film. Goldberg has long expressed her desire to make a third installment to her classic comedy franchise.
“Maybe, since you’re seeing everything, you’re figuring out what I’m doing here, but picture Sister Act and all the nuns standing here, waiting for the Pope to come out,” she said. “Maybe that’s going to happen in the new movie. You don’t know. You never know, but we are in Rome, and I am in Vatican City. What could I be doing? Why could I be here? We’ll find out.”
Disney greenlit Sister Act 3 in December 2020, with Tyler Perry attached to co-produce. Keke Palmer even shot her shot and asked Goldberg if she could have a role in the movie.
Perry later gave a major update on the movie in 2022 when he appeared on The View.
“I love the idea of us making this happen but you know, the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I’d like to,” he said at the time, per Us Weekly. “So we’ve got a good script. We’re off to a great start. We’re just trying to get everybody moving in the right direction so we can get it going.”
Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy is also set to reprise her role. Maybe The View ladies can also get their own roles, too!
