Whoopi Goldberg led a tribute on this morning’s episode of The View to the late congresswoman Mia Love, who died yesterday (March 23) at age 49 after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Love previously guest-hosted multiple episodes of The View back in 2021, while the show was searching for a permanent replacement after Meghan McCain — the show’s conservative voice — left the panel.

This morning, Goldberg mourned her former colleague with the rest of the Hot Topics table, while noting that Love’s presence on The View reinforced the idea that Americans with different politics can still have productive discussions.

“This got us—” she began, while sighing deeply. “We are heartbroken to learn that the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress, Mia Love, passed away at just 49, three years after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

“She was a guest co-host back in 2021 with us, and we had some fun with her,” Goldberg added. “And she will be missed. She will absolutely be missed.”

After Ana Navarro offered her condolences to Love’s children and Sunny Hostin remembered Love as “lovely,” Goldberg noted, “She came, she wanted to be part of what we’re doing here, you know. And that should remind you that it is possible for us all to not agree, but to get along and try to talk about it. It can be done.”

Love’s family announced her death on social media yesterday. They shared, in part, “With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today. She was in her home surrounded by family.”

“We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come,” they added.

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
