While there’s normally good vibes only between Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar at the Hot Topics table, the two longtime co-hosts couldn’t quite see eye-to-eye on this morning’s episode of The View. What began as an innocent conversation about the co-hosts’ favorite moments from Sunday’s (Feb. 16) Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special turned into a heavier discussion about stereotypes and the heightened division of today’s America.
The chat opened with a clip of Tom Hanks‘ return to “Black Jeopardy,” an SNL sketch he first starred in back in 2016. The sketch was met with ire from plenty of President Donald Trump‘s supporters (including SNL alum Victoria Jackson) and stirred up a debate of its own at the Hot Topics table, where Behar used it as a way to argue that we should “show both sides” when it comes to “the whole business of stereotyping.”
Behar explained, “When I was a kid, I grew up in a neighborhood with Italian Americans and the other side of the bridge there were the Polish kids, and the Polish kids used to tease the Italian kids about [being] in the mob.
“I used to say, ‘Wait, let me get my Renaissance files out, OK, because there are two sides to being Italian.’ You wanna talk about the mob, talk about Da Vinci,” Behar said. “You wanna talk about murders in Chicago? Talk about Michelangelo.”
When she continued, “It’s the same with every other group,” Goldberg swiftly cut in to raise a finger and argue, “No, it’s not.”

Behar appeared to be a bit stunned into silence as she paused, blinked and asked, “Why not?” as a heated Goldberg replied, “No, it is not. Because we don’t get the benefit of all of the— that’s why we have Black History Month.”
Her remark earned plenty of applause from the audience, and Behar seemed to agree, nodding and telling Goldberg, “It should be, is what I’m saying!”
Goldberg echoed, “What it should be, but it’s not,” then noted that the table had strayed about as far from their original topic as they could have. “None of this has anything to do with that I was talking about!” she exclaimed.
Poor Alyssa Farah Griffin even admitted earlier in the segment, “I thought we were talking about our favorite moments from SNL 50! I was not prepared properly for this.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
