Aubrey Plaza and the rest of her co-stars from HBO’s The White Lotus received the SAG Award for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series at Sunday night’s (Feb. 26) ceremony, but winning that award wasn’t the most notable thing Plaza did that night. Plaza had a few memorable moments at the show, which was broadcast on Netflix’s YouTube channel; causing fans to wonder whether she was upset while she took the stage with the White Lotus cast to accept their award.
While Plaza approached the stage, she wore dark sunglasses, prompting one TikTok user to state that something seemed “off with her.” As she stood on stage next to co-star Jon Gries, he took her arm, which she then pulled away, and he appeared to whisper something to her, causing her to look frustrated and adjust her dress.
As her co-star F. Murray Abraham gave an acceptance speech, Plaza was seen saying something (some speculate that she seemed irritated and said, “Jesus Christ!” others say it looks like she said, “Jesus, f—k”), and she walked offstage quickly, well before the rest of her co-stars did.
“She couldn’t get out of there fast enough,” the TikToker Visions.of.Georgie said.
While that onstage behavior caused fans to speculate that Plaza was in a dour mood, she turned on the charm at another point during the show.
While presenting the award for best actor in a television movie or limited series, Plaza and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega appeared together, a combination of two witchy, dark forces that were a delight to behold. The two kindred spirits performed a planned bit that emphasized both of their broody sides.
“I don’t know why they paired us up together,” Plaza deadpanned to an equally stone-faced Ortega. “Yeah,” Ortega replied, “we have nothing in common.”
“We should find who did this,” Plaza said, as she and Ortega then said in unison, “and curse their families and watch as misfortune follows their bloodline for the next seven generations.”
“Okay, I see it now,” Plaza said to enormous laughter.
