Hamilton fans were willing to wait for it: Ten years after the musical debuted on Broadway, and five years after the filmed stage show was release on Disney+, the Hamilton movie is finally being released in movie theaters this weekend.
The taped stage show of Hamilton—which was filmed at Broadway’s Richard Rogers Theater in June 2016—was originally supposed to open in theaters on October 21, 2021. But in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, composer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda opted to release the movie on Disney+ instead. The taped Hamilton performance was directed by Thomas Kail, who also directed and produced the Broadway production.
“When we filmed Hamilton, we wanted to try to capture the feeling of being in the Richard Rodgers Theatre during that first year on Broadway,” Kail said in a statement for the press release that announced the theatrical release. “We’re thrilled that audiences will now have the opportunity to experience it on the big screen.”
