Brad Ingelsby brought audiences to his native stomping grounds of Pennsylvania in the award-winning drama. Mare of Easttown. Now, he’s bringing HBO audiences back to the very same area of Delaware County for his new HBO series, Task.
Starring Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey, Task is a brand new HBO drama set in the same universe as Mare of Easttown about a former priest-turned FBI agent (Ruffalo) investigating a string of violent robberies led by a single father (Pelphrey) trying to save his family. Ruffalo dubbed the extended universe set in Philadelphia as “the ICU.”
“I’ve been in the ICU,” Ruffalo told USA Today. “That’s the Brad Ingelsby Cinematic Universe.”
While Mare of Easttown was centered on a chilling crime that hit close to home for Kate Winslet‘s protagonist Mare Sheehan, Ruffalo described Task as being a “really compassionate and empathetic take on cops and robbers” that will leave you rooting for both sides of the crime.
Ingelsby said his decision to return to Pennsylvania for the new show came from a place of “wanting to tell a story about the people that I grew up with.”
“It’s the people I know. It’s the blood in my veins. If I can write stories about this area for the rest of my life, I’d be satisfied,” he told Variety.
Task may take place in Philadelphia, but where is the show actually filmed?

Task was filmed on-location in Delaware County during the spring and summer of 2024, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ingelsby shared that parts of Episode 1 were filmed in an actual home in Downingtown that was designed by set decorators. The show also filmed in Coatesville, Ridley, Aston, Upper Chichester, Marcus Hook, Chester County and Chadds Ford. Certain specific locations featured in the show include Ridley Creek State Park and Wissahickon Valley Park.
Having both shows set in Delaware County meant the casts were faced with similar challenges, namely nailing that signature “DelCo” accent. Ruffalo said that he worked with dialect coach Susanne Sulby to develop it.
“I kept wanting to slip into Wisconsin or New York. The accent is specific and so weird and so idiosyncratic,” Ruffalo said. “It’s like the South meets Baltimore, with a little Italian and Irish accents sprinkled in.”
Pelphrey also admitted to having trouble with the accent. “That fucking accent was honestly keeping me up at night,” he told THR.
Task premiered on HBO Sept. 7, kicking off the limited series’ seven-episode run this fall.
New episodes of Task premiere on HBO and HBO Max Sundays at 9 p.m.
