On September 26, the official teaser trailer for Season 2 of The Last of Us dropped and… wow… we’re gonna need a minute.
Based on the video game franchise of the same name, HBO’s widely popular post-apocalyptic drama debuted to critical and audience acclaim in January 2023. The season finale was broadcast on March 12, so, yeah, it’s safe to say fans are more than ready for new episodes.
The second season takes place five years after the events of Season 1 and, per HBO, finds Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) collective past catching up to them, “drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
“You can’t heal something unless you’re brave enough to say it out loud.”
Kaitlyn Dever joins the cast in Season 2 as Abby, and Young Mazino and Isabela Merced will portray Jesse and Dina, respectively. Jeffrey Wright (Isaac Dixon) and Catherine O’Hara will also appear in the second season.
When exactly will The Last of Us Season 2 premiere on HBO and Max? Here’s everything we know.
You know it. In January 2023, HBO renewed The Last of Us for a second season.
Unfortunately, the upcoming season only consists of seven episodes.
“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” co-creator Craig Mazin told Deadline. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
But on the bright side, it looks like the series will extend well beyond a second season.
“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and [going] down interesting pathways, which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” Mazin said during the same Deadline interview. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”
There’s no official release date, but the show will return to HBO in 2025 with new episodes. The Season 1 finale aired in March 2023 and the series finished filming its second season in August 2024.
Based on the above, we expect the second season of The Last of Us to premiere in or around March/April 2025 on HBO.
All nine episodes of The Last of Us are now streaming on Max. You can also add Max to your Prime Video account for an additional $9.99/month. Amazon offers a seven-day free trial.
