The wait is nearly over: Killers of the Flower Moon is opening in theaters worldwide tomorrow.
Martin Scorsese’s new drama has been the talk of the film world for at least five years when it was first announced that the acclaimed director would be adapting David Grann’s 2017 nonfiction book of the same name. Based on the true story of the murders in the Osage Nation in the 1920s, Killers of the Flower Moon stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, a white man who married a Native American woman named Mollie (played by Lily Gladstone), at the behest of his greed-driven, morally bankrupt uncle (played by Robert De Niro). It’s the first time DiCaprio, De Niro, and Scorsese are teaming up on a film, so, naturally, film bros are excited.
That said, the less-hardcore cinephiles may balk at Killers of the Flower Moon‘s three-hour-and-36-minute runtime. If you’d rather wait to watch the movie at home—where at least you can pause and take a bathroom break—here’s what we know about where to watch Killers of the Flower Moon and when to expect Killers of the Flower Moon on streaming.
Killers of the Flower Moon opens in theaters worldwide on Friday, October 20. Right now, the only place to watch the new Martin Scorsese movie is at a movie theater. You can find a screening of Killers of the Flower Moon at a movie theater near you via Fandango. If want to see the movie on the really big screen, you can also see the movie at your closest IMAX theater.
Eventually, Killers of the Flower Moon will be available to watch online on Apple TV+, given that it is an Apple Original Film. (The film is a joint release by Apple and Paramount Pictures.) You will need a subscription to Apple TV+ in order to watch. So when will Killers of the Flower Moon be streaming on Apple TV+?
The Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Apple TV+ release date has not yet been announced, but we have reason to believe it will be on the streaming service in December 2023. In the past, Apple Original Films that open in theaters before streaming—like The Tragedy of Macbeth—have been released on the streaming service after just two or three weeks in theaters. However, because Killers of the Flower Moon is a highly-anticipated release from perhaps the most respected director in the world—a director who notoriously prefers people watch his films in theaters, rather than on streaming—it seems likely that Killers of the Flower Moon will be exclusive to theaters for at least month, if not longer.
According to a feature on the film for the British Film Institute, Paramount Pictures is handling a “six-week theatrical release” of Killers of the Flower Moon. While I haven’t seen that time frame reported anywhere else, if that’s true, then it’s possible you will see Killers of the Flower Moon on Apple TV+ shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, around the first week of December 2023. (Exactly six weeks after the theatrical opening would be December 1, 2023.)
However, perhaps if the film does well at the box office Paramount will want to keep the film in theaters through the Christmas movie season. This is all speculation, so if you want to catch the new Scorsese ASAP, your best bet is to watch Killers of the Flower Moon in theaters, opening on October 20.
