It’s officially “Gilded Age Girl” summer, with Apple TV+‘s The Buccaneers making its long-awaited return to our screens. The first season of The Buccaneers was an effervescently soapy take on Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel about the rich American heiresses who crossed the pond in search of blue blooded British husbands. The show was less a loyal adaptation than a rebellious deconstruction of the novelist’s themes. The Buccaneers‘s heroines stuck up for themselves in an inherently misogynistic world and most of their suitors were more dashing than disappointing. The Buccaneers Season 1 was sexy, shocking, and full of stellar needle drops.
The first season of The Buccaneers ends on a wild cliffhanger, with the spirited Nan St. George (Kristine Frøseth) choosing to marry Theo, Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers) in order to give her sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) cover to escape her abusive marriage to Lord Seadown (Barney Fishwick). You see, Nan thought she loved Theo, but that’s only because she was denying her true feelings for Theo’s best friend Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome). The night before her big society wedding, Nan sleeps with Guy and considers running away with him. Instead, she gives the pregnant Jinny her ticket to freedom with Guy.
The Buccaneers Season 1 also ends with the reveal that Nan’s secret birth mother isn’t just alive, but at Tintagel Castle for the wedding! Who is she? Why did she give Nan up? What’s going to happen next? (And she’s totally Leighton Meester, right?)
If you’re one of the many Buccaneers fans who can’t wait to catch up with Nan, Jinny, Conchita (Alisha Boe), Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag), Mabel (Josie Totah), Honoria (Mia Threapleton), and all their friends, lovers, and frenemies, you’re in luck! The Buccaneers Season 2 is premiering on Apple TV+ soon — but how soon?
