I wouldn’t exactly call Last Week Tonight with John Oliver a cure for the Sunday Scaries, but HBO’s trenchant late-night series is an entertaining way to bid farewell to the weekend.
Oliver’s deep dives into “society’s least asked for stories” are a hilarious, terrifying mix of comedy and bare-knuckle reality. The stories are distinctive, Oliver is a one-of-a-kind performer, and the jokes are truly one of a kind.
“In the U.S., the retirement age is… no.“
The previous season of Last Week Tonight was truncated (20 episodes instead of 30) due to the writers’ strike but there’s plenty more on the way. In December 2023, HBO renewed their popular series for three additional seasons, through 2026.
“We’re very happy to get to keep making this show with our fantastic staff,” Oliver said in a statement. “We will continue trying to stretch the term ‘entertainment’ to the breaking point.”
