Before Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Taylor Frankie Paul’s highly-anticipated season of The Bachelorette premieres in 2026, the franchise is reentering its Golden Era with The Golden Bachelor Season 2.
Gerry Turner’s debut season of the senior spin-off may have ended in divorce, but there’s no denying that the journey was a heartwarming success and ratings gold — as was Joan Vassos’ Golden Bachelorette season. So the show goes on, this time, with a new Golden Guy: Mel Owens, a 66-year-old former NFL veteran-turned-lawyer.
Members of Bachelor Nation may recall that after Owens was announced as Season 2’s leading Golden Guy, he dominated headlines for some controversial comments he made on MGoBlue’s In the Trenches podcast in June. ICYMI: Owens reportedly told producers he preferred women between ages 45 and 60 and during lunch with an EP of the show, he specified, “If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them” and “Try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.”
As expected, Bachelor Nation found the 66-year-old’s words offensive and swiftly called on ABC to replace him. (Even the OG Golden Guy was upset!) But ABC decided to keep Owens as leading man, and in an exclusive interview with Glamour in August, he apologized for his “unfair, insensitive” comments. A majority of the women cast on Owens’ season are, in fact, older than 60, and the Season 2 lead revealed he quickly apologized to the group his comments. He also admitted he was “absolutely shocked” by how “brilliant” they all are, so will he find love on his Golden Bachelor journey? We’re about to find out!
