Lifetime’s spring movie lineup continues with tonight’s Every Breath She Takes, a new thriller starring Tamala Jones as Jules, a wife who’s blamed for setting the fire that ends up killing her abusive husband Billy (Brian White). The blame doesn’t lead to jail, though. It’s just some town gossip that haunts her every single day — just like the visions she keeps having of Billy. When her insurance says that the fire was intentionally set, though, Jules starts to wonder if the gossip is true. If she can’t trust her own memories, then what can she trust?
Every Breath She Takes also features an all-star supporting lineup including sitcom legends Tisha Campbell and Jackée Harry.

As with plenty of Lifetime movies, Every Breath She Takes uses a real event as a springboard into a brand new story. And while we can’t say for sure that Every Breath She Takes was inspired beat by beat by this real event, it’s possible that the film drew some inspiration from the real story of Francine Hughes.
Hughes was an ex-wife and mother who set her live-in, ex-husband on fire and burned down their house in response to 13 years of mental, physical, and sexual abuse. Even though the couple divorced in 1971, James “Mickey” Hughes moved back in with his ex-wife and their children mere months later after a car accident left him in need of care. From there, Mickey abused Francine, killed their daughter’s kitten, and forced Francine to burn her textbooks from the secretarial course she’d enrolled in. Prior to setting the fire on the night of March 9, 1977, Mickey had physically kept Francine from making dinner for their children, berated her for attending school, and threatened her life after she called the police. The police didn’t do anything, though, because Mickey didn’t abuse Francine in front of them. After the police left, Mickey raped Francine.
After this, Francine poured gasoline around Mickey’s bed and set it on fire, burning him and the house down. Meanwhile, Francine drove her children to the police station where she confessed. She was ultimately found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity.
