So when do we find out what happens next?

Wondering is 9-1-1 on tonight, July 24? Will there be a 9-1-1 Season 9 on ABC? When does 9-1-1 return with new episodes on ABC? And what do 9-1-1‘s stars hope to see for their characters in Season 9? You’re not alone!

Here’s everything we know about the future of 9-1-1 on ABC, including 9-1-1 Season 9’s premiere date, 9-1-1 streaming info, new Season 9 teases from Jennifer Love Hewitt, and more.

9-1-1 Season 8 consisted of 18 episodes, which means Season 8, Episode 18, “Seismic Shifts,” which aired on Thursday, May 15, was the Season 8 finale.

You bet! On April 3, 2025, Deadline reported that ABC gave 9-1-1 an early Season 9 renewal. On April 29, 2025, following an especially emotional Season 8 episode, ABC revealed 9-1-1 scored 8.45 million total viewers after seven days of viewing, a five-month multi-platform high in the Adults 18-49 demographic. On Season 8 finale day, Deadline also reported that Bobby’s funeral episode, “The Last Alarm,” drew “9.18 million total viewers and a 1.75 rating among Adults 18-49 in Live and multi-platform viewing,” which marked a six-month record high. Overall, the series ranked fourth on ABC for the 2024/2025 broadcast season.

So when will 9-1-1 return with new episodes? ABC confirmed that the series will return in fall 2025 and continue to air on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. ET, followed by episodes of Ryan Murphy’s new spinoff, 9-1-1: Nashville, and now, we officially have a date! On July 17, ABC shared that 9-1-1 Season 9 premieres on Thursday, October 16 at 8:00 p.m. ET, followed by the 9-1-1: Nashville premiere. Per @911TVNEWS, Season 9 filming reportedly began on July 22, so stay tuned for BTS posts from set.

If you’re looking for a full 9-1-1 Season 8 finale rundown, Decider’s got you covered. Despite fan pleas for Minear to rewrite Bobby’s death and bring Peter Krause back to the show, the 118 captain appeared to be gone for good at the end of the eighth season. (Be sure to read Part 1 of our Season 8 post-mortem interview with Anirudh Pisharody for more on Bobby’s death.)

In a recent interview with Tommy DiDario on his I’ve Never Said This Before podcast, Jennifer Love Hewitt teased the season ahead, saying, “Lots of emergencies. Obviously this will be our first full season without Peter on the show, which is heartbreaking, because we all love him so much. So that’s gonna be different. I think everybody’s gonna change and evolve because he’s not on the show. And then lots of crazy stuff. I’m super interested to see what kind of breakdown Maddie’s going to have this season. Cause I always have some sort of breakdown. Hopefully I won’t get kidnapped this season. Although it’s fun when I do…”

As Hewitt teased, Season 9 will continue to show characters healing from their massive loss, while moving forward with new relationships, milestones, personal and professional challenges, and emergencies.

In an interview with UsWeekly, Ryan Guzman said, “You can’t just have the characters be all happy. That’s not gonna be a good show. So we gotta figure something out with Eddie. But I think the next relationship should be something life-changing that it just throws him off for a loop… He’s ready for the next thing to happen. So whenever that does happen, yeah. I think it should happen next season or so.” 9-1-1‘s Oliver Stark also looked ahead and shared Season 9 relationship hopes for his character Buck, telling Swoon, “I want Buck to make his romantic decisions from a much more well-considered place, not because he’s feeling upset about something else or whatever it is. I want him to be in control of the decisions he makes more than anything.”

In an interview with Decider, Pisharody also dove deep into his hopes for Ravi in Season 9, including a deeper dive into his character’s backstory and personal life outside the firehouse. (Read our full interview with the 9-1-1 star to learn what else is on his Season 9 wishlist.)
