Prime Video unveiled the first official trailer for The Wheel of Time Season 2, giving fans of the Robert Jordan books new looks at the villainous Seanchan empire, the heroic Aiel warrior Aviendha (Ayoola Smart), and at least one romantic reunion between Moraine (Rosamund Pike) and Siuan Sanche (Sophie Okonedo). However the reveal that Wheel of Time fans might be most excited about is a single shot of new cast member Natasha O’Keeffe embracing and comforting a troubled Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski). While Prime Video hasn’t yet announced who the Peaky Blinders alum is playing, that single moment seemingly confirms fan theories that she will be playing Selene and/or Lanfear in The Wheel of Time.
The Wheel of Time is based on the epic 15 book fantasy series by Robert Jordan (and Brandon Sanderson). In a time period known as the Third Age, a powerful channeler of the One Power is reborn in the body of farm boy Rand al’Thor. At the end of The Wheel of Time Season 1, Rand came to grips with his cataclysmic powers, which — in addition to making him a target for both evil magic users and political power players — will doom him to insanity. Rand took off on his own at the end of the first season and told his mentor, the Aes Sedai Moraine, to tell all his friends that he was in fact dead.
The Wheel of Time Season 2 trailer sees Rand and his friends scattered. Egwene (Madeleine Madden) and Nynaeve (Zoë Robins) are embarking on their Aes Sedai training in the White Tower, Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) is exploring his wolf-ish senses in a far-flung land, and Mat (Dónal Finn) is still apparently feeling the dark temptation of the dagger from Shadar Logoth. Meanwhile, new threats are emerging in the forms of the Seanchan Empire and the Dark One’s recently freed lieutenants.
Book spoilers and potential Wheel of Time Season 2 spoilers ahead!!!
One such evil lieutenant who pops up in the second Wheel of Time book is Lanfear, a skilled strategist and wielder of the One Power who was obsessively in love with Rand’s past self Lews Therin Telamon. Rand first encounters her in the books in the form of a gorgeous dark-haired, pale-skinned damsel in distress named Selene. He becomes infatuated with this mysterious woman before learning later that she has ulterior motives.
In the trailer, we see Rand cozying up to a gorgeous pale-skinned woman with raven dark hair played by Natasha O’Keeffe… which means the rumors that O’Keeffe is playing Lanfear or Seleen could be true. Or not! We’ll have to wait until the new season of The Wheel of Time launches to find out.
The Wheel of Time Season 2 premieres on Prime Video on September 1.
